The amount needed will depend on the type and depth of your arena base. The minimum amount recommended for an all purpose arena is 1 ton per 800 square of Perfect Rubber Mulch. The depth of your arena footing is a personal preference and you can always add more if desired. We recommend 1″-2″ and no more than 2″ of Equi-Tread Equestrian Mulch mixed with equal parts of masons coarse sand. Too deep and the footing will be too soft. Below is the coverage chart for one super sack at different depths. Jumping arenas will need the heavier coverage. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A SUGGESTED WAY TO BUILD AN ARENA BELOW. WE SELL RUBBER FOOTING AND DO NOT DO CONSULTATIONS. CONTACT YOUR BUILDER FOR WHAT IS BEST FOR YOUR CONDITIONS.

1. Choose a site that drains well and if possible has a natural slope for drainage. |

2. Measure the site and remove the organics. Grass and soil will turn to muck after a good rain. You do not want this contaminating your arena. |

3. When you have reached a solid base such as clay. Have the area leveled and sloped to 1% grade to the lowest point. Depending on how much you have removed from the site you will need to build it back up with a compactable aggregate such as pit run. This is an inexpensive way to build your subsurface back up to ground level. |

4. Next you will add 3/8″ road crush or limestone screenings. This layer will take a beating from your horses hooves. This need to be as close to 100% compacted as possible. Sloped to 1% and laser leveled. Depending on the traffic in your arena the road crush should be approximately 4-6″ It may also be called stone dust. You do not want this layer to break up and render your footing too deep. |
